COVID-19: New advice for infection prevention and control

With COVID-19 drastically changing the way healthcare providers run their organisations, there is nothing more important at this time than infection control.

Public Health England – along with NHS England, NHS Improvement and other bodies – have reviewed and updated the current recommendations surrounding infection prevention and control.

These changes include a new system for explaining the PPE required for different clinical scenarios (including hospitals, primary care, community and ambulance staff) as well as detailing how long PPE can be worn in different situations.

The new guidance also outlines new rules related to patient contact and includes new precautionary measures classifying ‘contact’ as being within 2 metres of a patient, along with new hand-washing advice which recommends the washing of forearms.

FFP3 are to be used as the primary respirators as they offer more protection than the FFP2 and N95 respirators – which can still be used if FFP3 respirators are not available.

Infection control is essential for any healthcare provider in maintaining a compliant working environment.

This should be covered and implemented through your policies and procedures, which are an essential part of your registration and the operation of your organisation.
